Google Business Profile: the complete guide for Indian businesses

Your Google Business Profile (previously Google My Business) is the first thing customers see when they search your name or "near me". This handbook covers everything — free setup, verification, optimization, posts, reviews, Insights, and what to do when a profile gets suspended.

Key takeaways

  • Google Business Profile is 100% free — anyone demanding money to "register/renew" your Google listing is running a scam.
  • A profile is only visible after verification — in India that's usually a short video of your shop.
  • Completeness drives ranking: category, services, hours, description, photos — fill everything.
  • Ongoing activity wins: weekly posts, fresh photos, and reviews with replies beat a set-and-forget profile.

What is a Google Business Profile?

It's the business card Google shows for you — on Search, on Maps, and now inside AI answers.

When someone searches your business name or a service "near me", Google shows a panel with your name, photos, rating, hours, phone, directions and reviews. That panel is your Google Business Profile (GBP) — Google renamed Google My Business (GMB) to this in 2021; it's the same thing.

For most local businesses in India, this free listing drives more calls and walk-ins than their website and social media combined. It's also the data source AI assistants like Gemini and ChatGPT use when someone asks "best [your category] near [your area]".

Search & Maps

Appear when customers search your name, your category, or "near me" in your area.

Calls & directions

One-tap call, WhatsApp and directions buttons straight from the listing.

Trust

Ratings, reviews, photos and your replies — the public proof customers check before choosing.

Setting up your profile (free, ~15 minutes)

1

Sign in with the right Gmail

Use the account you want to own the business — it controls everything. You can add managers later.

2

Add your business on google.com/business

Search your business name first — Google may have already created a listing from public data that you just need to claim.

3

Choose the most specific category

"Ladies tailor" beats "Store". Your primary category is the single biggest relevance signal — add secondary categories later.

4

Add address or service area

Shops enter the full address. Home businesses and door-step services can hide the address and define a service area instead.

5

Add a phone number you answer

Google may call to verify, and every customer call comes to this number.

6

Verify

See the next section — nothing is public until verification passes.

Verification: how it works in India

Most Indian businesses today get video verification. Done right, it passes in one attempt.

Video verification checklist

Record one continuous video showing:
  • The street and nearby landmarks — so Google can confirm the location
  • Your shop board / name plate with the business name clearly readable
  • The inside of the business — stock, equipment, seating
  • Proof you run it — opening the shutter with your key, the billing counter, GST certificate on the wall

Review usually takes a few days. If it fails, don't spam attempts — re-record covering all four items above in good light. Phone/SMS and postcard verification appear for some categories; the postcard takes 1–2 weeks.

Until verification passes, the profile is invisible on Maps — this is the #1 reason a new business "doesn't show on Google".

Optimization: the fields that actually move ranking

Google ranks local businesses on relevance, distance and prominence. Every field below feeds one of those.

FieldWhat to doWhy it matters
Business nameYour real name only — no city, no keywordsKeyword-stuffed names are the top suspension trigger
CategoriesMost specific primary + relevant secondariesThe strongest relevance signal you control
Services / menuList every service with prices where possibleMatches you to long-tail searches ("bridal mehndi near me")
Description750 chars covering what, who and where naturallyFeeds relevance and AI answer summaries
HoursAccurate, including festival/holiday hours"Closed now" at 7pm quietly kills conversions
PhotosFresh, real photos monthly — storefront, work, teamProfiles with recent photos get more clicks and calls
AttributesMark payments, parking, accessibility etc.Extra matches and richer AI descriptions
Website & WhatsAppAdd both linksMore conversion paths from the same listing

Weekly activity: posts, photos and reviews

Google rewards active businesses. Thirty minutes a week is enough if it's consistent.

Post weekly

Offers, new arrivals, festival greetings, behind-the-scenes — a post a week signals a living business and fills your profile with fresh, keyword-rich content.

Add photos monthly

Real photos beat stock every time. Storefront, products, happy moments, the team at work.

Grow reviews continuously

Ask at the happy moment, share your direct review link, reply to everything. Full playbook: how to get more Google reviews.

Reading your Performance (Insights)

The Performance tab shows the searches that surfaced you, plus calls, direction requests and website clicks. Watch the search keywords — they tell you exactly what customers type. If "AC repair [your area]" surfaces you but your services don't list AC repair explicitly, add it and watch impressions grow.

Common problems and how to fix them

Profile suspended

Usual triggers and the fix:
  • Keywords in the name ("Sharma Electronics Best AC Repair Delhi") → change to the real name, then request reinstatement
  • Virtual office / co-working address for a storefront listing → use a real address or switch to service-area business
  • Duplicate profiles → remove duplicates, keep one
  • Bulk edits in one day → make big changes gradually

Fix the violation first, then submit one reinstatement request with proof — shop photos, electricity bill, GST certificate. Multiple appeals without fixing anything get auto-rejected.

"My business doesn't show on Google"

Check in order: is it verified? Is the address/pin correct on the map? Is the primary category right? Then remember distance — you'll rank near your location first; showing up across the whole city takes prominence built over months.

Wrong information edited by the public

Google lets users "suggest edits", and unattended profiles accept them silently. Check your profile weekly — or use an app that alerts you to changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes, completely free — creating, verifying and managing it costs nothing. Beware of callers demanding money to "register" or "renew" your Google listing; that's a common scam targeting Indian businesses. Google never calls asking for payment.

Is Google My Business the same as Google Business Profile?

Yes. Google renamed Google My Business (GMB) to Google Business Profile in 2021. Same listing, same dashboard — now managed directly from Google Maps and Search.

How long does verification take?

Video verification is usually reviewed within a few days; postcards take 1–2 weeks. If it fails, re-record one continuous video showing your shop board, the inside of the shop, and the street outside.

Why was my profile suspended?

Most common: extra keywords in the business name, a virtual address, duplicate listings, or sudden bulk edits. Fix the violation first, then submit one reinstatement request with proof (shop photos, bills, GST certificate).

How often should I post?

At least weekly. Posts signal an active business, appear on your public profile, and add fresh keyword-rich content. Pair them with monthly photo uploads and a steady flow of reviews.

Can I manage everything from my phone?

Yes — natively via Google Maps, or with an app like Repixo which adds AI review replies, automatic posts, a Profile Score checklist, WhatsApp review requests and daily ready-made content on top.
